Beer Trip: Pathlight Brewing in Shawnee, Kansas
For those of us who don’t like driving to downtown KC, MO every time you want a good brewery experience, Pathlight Brewing is perfectly located within the Shawnee suburbs. Offering a fun atmosphere and great beer, this is a solid place to spend a few hours.
The Brewery
Located within a strip mall, one wouldn’t initially think much of Pathlight from the outside; however, once inside it takes on new life with a fun, bustling brewery vibe. This facility features bright walls, a white tile backsplash, a concrete bar top, and lightly stained wooden tabletops. This, paired with tons of natural light and lots of live plants sprinkled in, gives Pathlight an airy, spacious feel. Brown leather couches and a movie or sports on the wall projector make the inside feel both chic and cozy.
Outside, Pathlight has a decent sized patio area complete with heaters for a cooler day. The patio is actually what brought us here, as they are also dog-friendly and allowed Barley to tag along. The indoor and outdoor areas are joined together with a large, cutout window so you can mingle with friends inside and out.
The Beer
The beer choices at Pathlight are all over the board as far as styles go. While half of their menu is filled with traditional options such as a porter, amber, or IPA, the other half is comprised of more unique selections like a wild ale, farmhouse ale, and a hoppy lager. They have 10 beers on tap, but additionally 4-5 large bottle selections of barrel-aged wild ales. If bouncing between different beer styles is your thing, then Pathlight is your type of place.
The brewers at Pathlight definitely know what they’re doing with each and every style that they brew. Having visited multiple times, we haven’t tried anything we didn’t like. One of our favorites is their Banker’s Hours, which is a slightly sweet amber lager with a great caramel taste. On our most recent trip, the dark beer was actually our go-to, with the Canadian Breakfast Kodiak (porter) and the Vaughn’s (Irish Stout) both being fantastic choices.
Food & Merch
As a self-proclaimed history buff, the logo at Pathlight is reminiscent of Paul Revere’s night ride - this logo pairs nicely with its merchandise selection including glassware, shirts, jackets, and hats. If you only have time to stop in for one drink, you’ll be happy to find that Pathlight offers many cans and bottles to go.
While Pathlight doesn’t have a kitchen itself, they do allow outside food to be brought in and often partner with other local businesses and food trucks for events.
