Beer Trip: Avery Brewing Co. in Boulder, Colorado
With Colorado being a beer-lover’s dream, it can be difficult to choose where to visit on your beer trip. Avery Brewing Company was a place we were somewhat familiar with, and we were definitely glad we made this one of our stops.
The Brewery
If the weather is nice out, there is probably no brewery with a better outdoor scene than Avery. The dog-friendly patio area is absolutely massive, with no exaggeration that it’s probably the largest one we’ve ever been to. With plenty of seating, a tent of free giveaways for a beer launch, and live music, the outdoor area seemed like the place to be.
The building itself is a large, two-story facility trimmed out in their logo colors of red and white. The brewery itself encompasses most of the building, while a decent-sized indoor dining and bar area can be found on both the first and second floors as well.
The Beer
Being a larger facility with mass production, you never really know going in if they will only have their mainstream options or if they’ll push the envelope. Avery was one of the latter, offering a whopping 30 beers on tap! Of course they served their major ones like the Ellie’s Brown Ale, Little Rascal, and the Avery IPA, but there were also 4 of their seasonals along with 10 brewery exclusive options. The beer styles were just as vast as the tap list and included IPAs, stouts, sours, and multiple barrel-aged options.
The beer flavor at Avery is just as impressive as their selection. Being a warm afternoon, a stout isn’t normally a top choice; however, we made an exception for the Mary Ann’s Pie. This double milk stout was potent at a whopping 14.5%, but offered a great lime and coconut taste. The Electric Sunshine might be our new go-to summer beer! This one had a fantastic fruity flavor, yet was light enough where you could drink it all day long. They happened to be having a special release event for this one while we were visiting, which brought with it free samples!
Food, Merch, & More
One thing at Avery that we had never seen before was their self-guided tour offering. Initially brought on by COVID-19, you can now continue to take your own tour of the brewery overlooking the factory below from the top floor. Without needing a reservation, you can walk through and see the mash tanks, canning line, and picture how normal operations go (it wasn’t running on the weekend).
If you’re looking for some grub, Avery touts a full restaurant onsite in addition to their beer. Morgan tried the veggie tacos (delicious, but spicy!) and Chris had the pulled pork sandwich - both were pretty solid. The outdoor dining area also features a multitude of water dishes for you to bring over for your furry friend, which was helpful since Barley was joining us.
The second floor of Avery houses their gift shop and this retail space had all sorts of shirts, glassware, and signage along with their mass-produced beer options.
