Beer Trip: Uinta Brewing in Salt Lake City, Utah

Most people don’t view Salt Lake City (or Utah, for that matter!) as a brewery destination, but the city actually has many options to choose from. Uinta Brewing is one of the larger facilities in town and is definitely worth the visit. On this Beer Trip we met up with Chris’s brother Cody and his wife, Anna, who also enjoy craft beer.

A sunshine-filled summer day at Uinta!

The Brewery

Having actually visited Uinta a few years ago, it was exciting to see that they had expanded since the last visit. From the outside, the building stands two stories tall and is unmistakably a brewery by their huge fermentation tanks out front. To the right of the main entrance is a good-sized outdoor patio area. It happened to be a rather warm afternoon when we visited, so we opted for the huge indoor seating area instead.

Not too full on a hot afternoon, but a really impressive outdoor space!

Inside consists of a large bar that spans half of the room and includes seating for 12+. The back wall of the bar is the focal point of the whole space, being constructed of weathered wood with cutouts of Uinta lettering and a mountain range. For someone who enjoys woodworking, it was pretty neat. Much like other parts of Utah, the whole place gave you a true, outdoorsy vibe.

The Beer

Wide range of color in their brews!

There is no shortage of beer options at Uinta as they offer roughly 15 beers on tap, along with additional canned options. With Utah law mandating draft beers stay under 5% ABV, it is nice that they provide canned options (especially since some of those are their more well-known choices). If you are like us and are drawn to a can’s artwork, Uinta will make it tough for you to choose - all of their labeling has an outdoor theme and is very well-designed. While we visited, their beer styles ranged from pilsners, IPAs, lagers, sours, and wheats - just to name a few.

The delicious Cutthroat pale ale!

Reading a bit about their story, it was quickly determined that Cutthroat was Uinta’s first mainstream beer - and it’s easy to see why. This is the best pale ale we’ve ever had! It has a fantastic malty, caramel taste; however, combines just the right amount of hops with it - it’s the perfect balance. While this one was our favorite, the other beers were also very enjoyable. The Mango Golden Spike was another top choice of the group. While maybe not our preferred style of beer for the summertime, we went ahead and tried the Baba Organic Black Lager and were rather impressed here as well. It was rather smooth and had just a subtle coffee taste, but wasn’t overly heavy.

Food, Merch, & More

In addition to the abundance of beer, Uinta is also a full restaurant serving sandwiches, burgers, salads, and more. We didn’t eat here, but the food definitely did look appetizing. If beer isn’t your thing, they also serve cocktails of your choosing.

The merchandise Uinta offers is actually in its own part of the building across the hall from the tasting room. Like you would hope for with a brewery of this size, they had plenty of options to choose from including shirts, hats, stickers, signage for nearly ever beer they mass produce, and plenty of to-go beer options. To our disappointment, the one item they lacked was a tap handle to take home.

More to-go beer than you could ever hope for (and a ‘Make Your Own 6-Pack’ option)!

T-shirts, hats, & signs

Variety of coasters & glassware

We had hoped to take a tour here, but unfortunately tours were suspended. If we ever return, we’d sure put this on our list!

While you can find Uinta beer throughout all of Utah and even in Kansas, make sure the brewery itself is on your destination list if you find yourself in Salt Lake City.

Cheers!
