Beer Trip: Stockyards Brewing Co. in Kansas City, Missouri
Located just to the west of downtown, Stockyards Brewing Co. is an easy drive from nearly anywhere in Kansas City and provides a great spot for a drink or two.
The Brewery
Stockyards Brewing is perhaps the overall best-themed brewery we’ve ever been to. Located in Kansas City’s old Stockyards District, it definitely stays true to the area with an authentic western look. The back wall has a huge mural of a cattle drive framed in with wooden pillars and a porch-like railing. There are other western paintings throughout, as well as beautiful stained glass pieces.
If you happen to sit at the bar, make sure to look up and note the beautiful glass ceiling panels and behind the bar at the boot-spur taps. While we recommend sitting indoors to get the full impact here, Stockyards does have a nice outdoor patio located at the back of the building. They also pride themselves in offering events frequently, including live music most Sundays!
The Beer
A neat thing to note about the Stockyards beer selection is that all of their drafts are different and no two beers are from the same style. With 8 taps present, they ranged from a dark stout and Dunkel to a Mexican lager and pale ale. We’ve visited multiple times over the years and it is worth noting that their options don’t change much over time - they tend to keep the same beers on tap. With that said, it does make it convenient to tell your friends which beer they should try on their visit!
The beers we have tried have all been solid here in the flavor department. Scottish style ales tend to be a favorite of Chris’s, with the Fox Trotter having good malts and a slightly smoky taste. The West Hef, a hefeweizen, was probably Morgan’s top beer on the recent visit - it had an easy-drinking, rich, gold color with the great banana taste that hefs typically possess.
Food & Merch
In addition to beer, Stockyards has a full-service bar that includes a solid allotment of whiskey. They do not have any food options, but the Golden Ox steakhouse is conveniently located next door and open most evenings. Staying true to their theme, all of their wearable merchandise was also western-themed and included bandanas, plaid shirts, and some awesome children’s clothing choices.
