Beer Trip: Flag City Brewing in Webb City, Missouri

Webb City, Missouri is a unique little town that sits right outside of Joplin. Coming into town from the west you pass right by Flag City Brewing, which sits on a lot all by itself. While it might look small, this place has plenty to offer!

A tiny microbrewery with lots of charm!

The Brewery

Mining themed decor and plenty of board games for everyone

Flag City has a large lot with plenty of parking, paired with a nice sized outdoor area. The building itself sits on top of a small hill and makes it look even smaller than it feels once you’re inside. Everything in the building is mining themed, including shovels, picks, and vintage pictures to pair with the weathered wood on the walls and roofline.

They have a nice, 8-person bar on one side and about a dozen other tables spread about for other seating. We snuggled right up to the bar where Cheryl, one of the owners’ wives, made us feel right at home. They additionally have tons of board games, which several groups were taking advantage of while we were visiting. We were also informed that their trivia and karaoke nights bring in quite the crowds!

The Beer

The brewing area is one of the smaller ones we’ve seen; however, they still provide 5 of their own beers along with one or two additional guest taps. We were told that their brown, bitter, IPA, and wheat were always on the menu and that they rotate the last option seasonally or when the brewmaster sees fit. One neat thing about their beer is that each one gets its namesake from local mining landmarks. The Sucker Flatts Wheat, for example, is named after the 1900’s mining pit in town, which has long since been abandoned.

With the fairly limited selection, we were definitely pleased that the beers we tried were all very enjoyable taste-wise. One of the favorites was the Oronogo Circle IPA. This isn’t your typical American IPA, as we found it to have somewhat of a buttery flavor to go with a nice hint of citrus. The other one that stood out was the Old #60 Brown Ale. Offering the perfect roasty taste, it was also rather sweet making it the perfect beer on a fall day.

Food, Merch, & More

If beer isn’t your thing, they also make spiked slushies featuring a local moonshine, as well as homemade root beer! While Flag City does not serve food themselves, food trucks make frequent appearances and they also have free popcorn with various toppings - big plus for us!

Delicious, fresh popcorn!

A fairly large selection of merchandise for such a small brewery!

The merchandise section has several t-shirt, hoodie, and hat options (and of course we picked up a brewery sticker). You can also get any of their beers filled up in crowlers to take one home with you.

Flag City Brewing has everything a small town brewery should have: good beer, great service, and a fun, welcoming atmosphere. We will definitely be back one day.

Cheers!
