Beer Trip: Deep Ellum Brewing Company in Dallas, Texas
Sitting close to downtown Dallas is Deep Ellum Brewing Company. Offering a large selection of craft brews to go with their unique indoor and outdoor spaces, this place is one you won’t want to miss.
The Brewery
It was dark out during our visit, but you still couldn’t miss Deep Ellum when approaching with its huge fermentation tanks and distribution trucks parked outside. The indoor space has a bit of a skater vibe to it with a concrete floor, chain link fence, and stickers strategically covering every support column.
To the right of the front door is a 10-person bar with an awesome brick backwall featuring the brewery’s namesake.. The outdoor area behind the building is equally impressive! There are lots of tables and a large stage, all sitting on top of green turf. When the weather is nice, we’re certain this is the place to be!
The Beer
Not familiar with Deep Ellum, we were quite surprised at how large this brewery was and how much they distribute around the DFW area. With 14 unique beers on tap, it was tough to decide what to order. When visiting, their selection included multiple bocks, a pilsner, a blonde, and a stout, but roughly half of the menu was comprised of various IPAs. In chatting with the bartender, she informed us that 8 or so beers are flagships and the others are seasonal rotators.
We ended up choosing a flight to try multiple options and are sure glad we did, as we would have likely missed out on some of the best drafts otherwise. The first sample was the Dallas Blonde, which is probably their most popular beer based on its availability around town throughout the trip. This blonde was rather sweet and not as clean as typical of this style, which was a plus.
The Play Date was another flagship and was advertised as a sour. While one could certainly pick up the subtle sour flavor, it was the fruitiness that we really enjoyed. By far, though, the best selection of the visit was the Nutty Buddy Bock - probably the best bock we’ve ever had! The hazelnut flavor was fantastic and was combined nicely with a good roast and chocolate taste.
Food, Merch, & More
In addition to being a brewery, Deep Ellum is also a full restaurant with a robust menu featuring salads, burgers, tacos, and pizza (we’d highly recommend the Texican Burger)! Beer is their primary drink, but they had seltzer slushies as well which was quite unique and would be perfect for a hot summer day.
If merchandise is your thing, then they have you covered in that category as well. Featuring tons of shirts, a baby onesie, hats, stickers, and even a growler koozie, they had quite the selection. They also had multiple refrigerators full of their 6-packs for you to take home. We actually managed to get a full 12-pack back to Kansas via checked airport bag!
Deep Ellum offers brewery tours every Saturday for $20, which includes a keepsake pint glass and 3 full pours. Had we visited on a weekend, this would have been the way to go for sure.
Deep Ellum offered such a great experience that we’ve already recommended it to others visiting the Dallas area. If you happen to be in town, make this one of your stops.
Cheers!
