Beer Trip: Common Space Brewery in Hawthorne, California
While on a California trip to Disneyland & Universal, we still made ample time for brewery pit stops along the way. One of our favorites was Common Space Brewery in Hawthorne, CA - a suburb of Los Angeles.
The Brewery
Originating in 2018, Common Space is located in an old warehouse style building featuring a wooden ceiling, old brick sides, and offers the perfect vibe. The walls throughout are covered with unique graffiti artwork and this feel carries over to the look of their tap lists, all offering pops of bright, vibrant colors. The seating area is divided roughly 50/50 indoor and outdoor space with plenty of room available to host a large crowd. Common Space even allows dogs both inside and outside, which you don’t always see many places.
The Beer
Walking in, the tap list makes it apparently clear that this is a west coast brewery solely by the number of IPAs featured - they make up nearly half of the menu! With that said, there are other offerings including an amber, sours, and multiple lagers. With nearly twenty beers on draft at Common Space, there will be an option for anyone.
With IPAs seeming to be their primary focus, they definitely don’t disappoint in the flavor category. The Food Fight Hazy IPA was one of the best IPAs Chris had ever had, providing the perfect amount of haze and wrapping up with a nice, juicy finish. Another top choice was the Chubby Unicorn, a slightly creamy milkshake IPA offering a nice guava taste. This brew appeared to be a local favorite, judging by the wooden cutout unicorn made for a photo op! While all of their beer wasn’t necessarily to our liking, everything was definitely drinkable and the overall feel of the venue made up for it.
Food & Merch
The merchandise section at Common Space is fairly robust- although they offer typical items like shirts and hats, they also offer glassware, beanies, coolers, and even a nice woven blanket. If taking beer home is your thing, they had a ton of selections to choose from; however, you couldn’t separate and had to buy a full 4 or 6 pack. We didn’t eat onsite here, but they offer a rotating food truck every single day.
Common Space may not be located in the most ideal spot for tourists, but you can get their beer at numerous locations throughout LA. If you do have time to go out of your way and make the drive, it will be worth your efforts.
Cheers!
