Beer Trip: Alma Mader Brewing in Kansas City, Missouri
Providing a great family atmosphere only a short drive from downtown Kansas City, Alma Mader Brewing is a great place to stop in for a drink or two.
The Brewery
Although Alma Mader is less than half a mile from Boulevard Brewing Company, it’s in an industrial area that you can easily miss if you aren’t keeping an eye out.
The plain outside is a stark contrast from the inside, featuring bright white paint and tiling along with light, stained, wood accent walls and lots of live plants. The side room gives you a direct view of their process, as you’re able to see directly into their facility with large fermentation tanks.
All of their seating is indoors here and, although we didn’t have an issue getting a seat, you could definitely tell that space could be limited on a busy day.
One of the neater observations we made was the number of families here - each one playing a different board game or spending time with one another. The family atmosphere and dog-friendly policy make this place really stand out.
The Beer
With 9 different beers on tap, Alma Mader provides beers that you won’t experience at most other locations in Kansas City. When we visited the selection consisted of pale ales, IPAs, milk stouts, and a unique selection of pilsners. Their pilsner choices included options brewed as French, German, and Czech styles (something we hadn’t seen done before!) and it was fun to discover the differences in the flavor. The Klinker was the German style pilsner and had great bready taste with a hoppy finish, as well as quite the entertaining name.
The beer here is definitely something that can be appreciated. While the pale ale and IPA were a little hoppy for our liking, they were both solid drinks and would be the perfect fit for a hop lover. The one style Alma Mader does better than most is their milk stouts. The Nico is actually a double milk stout, but was incredibly smooth and provided a nice cinnamon kick. This one ended up being our favorite on the menu.
Food & Merch
There was a nice selection of merchandise here including the typical t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and glassware, but they also offered some nice dog toys! Along the wall near the bar there were multiple coolers including a strong selection of to-go beers, some of which they didn’t have on tap. For the children visiting, they did have juice boxes on the menu which was a pretty neat touch.
If you’re looking for a quieter brewery for yourself or your whole family, then Alma Mader would be the place for you.
Cheers!
