Beer Trip: Chaos Brewing in Joplin, Missouri
Downtown Joplin houses the only brewery within its city limits, which is Chaos Brewing. With a huge space, neat atmosphere, and plenty of beer options, this one is definitely worth checking out.
The Brewery
Situated downtown in a neat brick building, the place is broken up into two spaces inside separated by cutouts through the wall. The side you first walk in on offers a huge seating area with larger tables, as well as a fun gaming area in the back complete with tons of board games and a shuffleboard table (which appeared to get plenty of use while we were there)!
The other side is bar seating, as well as the full brewery. Chaos actually has bar seats overlooking the brewery equipment itself, which was kind of different - it would definitely be fun to sit and watch when the brewing process was active! They have multiple TVs behind the bar and seemed to be quite the place to enjoy a ballgame. It was pretty chilly outside when we visited, but they also have a small outdoor patio area behind the building.
The Beer
No matter what type of beer you’re into, Chaos is certain to have something within your pallet in their 12 different offerings. When we visited they offered a stout, wheat, cream ale, IPAs, and a couple of sours (just to name a few)! The bartender informed us that 3 to 4 of their options tend to stay on as regulars, but that the majority is in constant rotation. If you’re like us, that’s a big plus for repeat visits!
With all of the choices, a flight was an easy decision here to maximize the time we had to spend. In the 6 beers in the flight, everything was solid taste-wise. The Tropical Storm was probably the top option of the trip - this New England style IPA had the typical haze to it, but was also a bit tropical and very sweet. A couple others that stood out were the Flightless Fruit, a nice sour Berliner Weisse, and the Blonde Hair Dark Roots - a coffee blonde, but with a bit of a hoppiness to it.
Food, Merch, & More
If beer isn’t your thing, Chaos has a full bar and they even offered their own kombucha when we visited. They were also more than happy to make a custom mocktail for Morgan (which she greatly appreciated)!
As far as food goes, pizza appears to be their sole item - it looked delicious, and you could order them with any toppings you pleased.
For being a smaller brewery, the merchandise selection at Chaos was great. With tons of different shirts, hats, and glassware, there were many choices (they even had custom dog treats)! The one “knock” we had is that they were out of stickers - guess we’ll just have to make another trip back!
While Joplin isn’t a brewery destination by any means, Chaos should be on your list of places to check out. The fun atmosphere and abundance of beer make it the perfect place to kill a few hours.
Cheers!
