Beer Trip: Black Stag Brewery & Pub in Lawrence, KS
Lawrence is a short drive for us and has several unique breweries, one of which being Black Stag Brewery & Pub located right in the heart of downtown LFK. With good food and a vast beer selection, it made for the perfect pit stop the last time we were in town for lunch.

The Brewery

Situated right on Massachusetts Street (Mass Street!), Black Stag has an awesome outdoor patio with tables, couches, and many live plants. During the winter time they are able to wall up this area and keep it heated, so it’s still active year-round. The inside portion features brick walls and lots of warm wood throughout the floor, bar, and tabletops. This place is actually very large and has tons of seating, so we haven’t ever had an issue getting a table here. The brewing process is visible from behind a half-wall along the side of the facility so you can watch the whole process if it happens to be active during your visit!

The Beer
The Oktoberfest was back during our visit, too!
Black Stag has one of the larger selections of taps in the region, with 15+ beers on draft. This includes IPAs, a pilsner, a gose, porter, and everything else in-between. Their brewer seems to have strong German style roots, with many of their offerings falling into this category.
One of the neater things about Black Stag is the back story on some of their beer names - an example includes the McCool’s Irish Red, named after the giant named Finn McCool who saved Ireland. Another example is a beer created after taking bits and pieces from the beer recipes of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson - thus the Our Founding Fathers Tavern Ale was born!
Having stopped in on multiple occasions, Black Stag has always provided solid beer. Perhaps their most popular option is the 7 Mile IPA, which is rather bitter even by IPA standards. With that said, it has a great combination of hops creating just the right citrus taste! We tried several of their seasonal offerings on our latest visit, with the Mt. Bleu Belgian being the favorite. This Belgian wit is brewed with orange peel and even Belgian rock candy, creating the perfect combination of spices and just a hint of orange.
Food, Merch, & More
Black Stag has more of a restaurant vibe than a brewery, with table service and a full food menu. They have tons of options for lunch or dinner, including salads, burgers, sandwiches, pastas, and steaks. In addition to food and beer, they also have a full bar with a wide range of cocktails.

As far as merchandise goes, they have several shirts, hats, and coffee mugs. One of the more unique offerings here is that all of their wall artwork is actually available for sale and features local artists!
While you have many options in Lawrence for a cold beer and good food, Black Stag consistently has offered us an enjoyable experience time and time again.
