Beer Trip: Servaes Brewing Company in Shawnee, Kansas
Perhaps our favorite brewery in the Kansas City metro is Servaes Brewing Company. This stop is a short, 20-minute drive from our house (and a drive we’ve made countless times)! Their newly expanded space was much needed, providing an even better family atmosphere to go with their already awesome beer.
The Brewery
As previously mentioned, Servaes has recently expanded its space to double its size in downtown Shawnee. What used to consist of a single bar and 10-ish tables now features 20+ seating areas, two bars, and even a children’s play area! They put a lot of emphasis on creating a family-friendly atmosphere here by offering a nice selection of board games, kids’ toys, and are even dog-friendly.
The space itself is very bright with tons of natural light coming in through a wall of exterior windows. This combines nicely with the fun yellow and teal walls and decor spread throughout the place, including a custom wood piece that they were able to relocate and maintain after their renovation. Something unique and noteworthy about Servaes is that it is the first woman-owned, woman-brewed brewery in the State of Kansas!
The Beer
Servaes has a lineup of around 15 beers of their own, plus another 6 or so guest taps at any given time. We have a bit of a love/hate relationship (mostly love!) with their options, as we love to try new beer, but hate that we can’t try what we like again - this is due to Servaes constantly rotating their taps and rarely brewing the same thing twice. They have made a name for themselves for their sours, but also have IPAs, cream ales, and stouts - no matter who you are, you can find something you’ll like.
Of the many things Servaes does right, their beer quality rivals that of anyone. Their brewer does things a little differently than most breweries, with a lot of their options having the same beer-style base and then mixing up the added flavor. For example, they have a Berliner Weisse (called Dreams in Color) in which they swap out the flavorings with different fruits, hops, and coffees to create new twists on the typical base. A couple of their other mainstays that they do this with are the Two Oceans (sour), Rise Up (milk stout), and Empty Canvas (cream ale), all of which will vary slightly depending on when you visit.
One thing we love about Servaes is that they host themed days where all of the given beers match that theme. From pickle day, Girl Scout Cookie day, cereal day, or pumpkin day, we can always find another excuse to return to Servaes and try more beer.
Food, Merch, & More
For those who don’t like beer, Servaes does offer wine - but they’re also well-known for their own craft soda line that is made in partnership with the brewer’s son, Aaron! They do not have a kitchen but welcome outside food from the many neighboring businesses.
Before you leave, be sure to check out the merchandise section consisting of shirts, hats, beanies, and stickers - or grab a 4-pack to take home.
It’s been fun to watch Servaes grow over the last 5 years we’ve been visiting. With their great beer selection and fun family-friendly atmosphere, their growth is no surprise. Whether you stop in for a drink or check out one of their many events, be sure you check this place out while in Kansas City!
Cheers!
