Beer Trip: Rockcreek Brewing Co. in Mission, Kansas
Located just outside of downtown Mission, Rockcreek Brewing Co. offers great beer and a fantastic atmosphere - which makes it the perfect place to park yourself for one drink (or many)!
The Brewery
Walking up to Rockcreek, you’re first greeted with a large outdoor area that’s tied in nicely to the indoor space by three large, glass garage doors. These are typically open when it’s warm out (but unfortunately for us, we picked a chilly evening)! The indoor space is still desirable and includes a large bar as the focal point, complete with neat lighting that wraps the bar top. There are plenty of tables both indoors and out, so finding a seat should not be an issue here.
Other neat features are that most of their indoor tables are live-edge wood, giving the facility a rustic feel. There’s also an indoor fire place, which really makes it feel like home. To top it all off, a large interior window provides all patrons a special look at the equipment - so you can see where your beer is being brewed while you enjoy it!
The Beer
Rockcreek provides a wide range of beer options, ranging from a lighter blonde and a sour to a dark porter and stout, as well as a multitude of IPAs. The very friendly bartenders informed us that they typically keep 3-4 of their options on draft continually and rotate out the remaining 8 - 9 (which means a total of ~12 beers for you to enjoy at any given time)! One fun thing we discovered is that the brewery owners, head brewers, and close friends each take their turn to name the next beer. As you can imagine, this creates quite a smorgasbord of titles - including the Switcheroo and our favorite name - the Zocchihedron Oat Lager. A zocchihedron is a 100-sided dice and the beer is named in honor of it being the 100th beer they’ve brewed to date!
The head brewer here truly produces some of the better beer in the Kansas City area and continually pushes the flavor profile. One such example is their Carnival With Phantasm, which is a New England style IPA brewed with “phantasm” - a powder made from grapes and imported from New Zealand. Our bartender shared that Rockcreek was the first brewery in the KC metro to feature these powder hops. This unique addition created a great citrus flavor that combined nicely with the haze of the IPA.
Our personal favorite of this trip to Rockcreek was the Chauncey’s. This Irish red is fairly dry, but leaves you with a subtle caramel aftertaste that keeps you wanting more.
Food & Merch
Rockcreek is set up perfectly for local food trucks to park next to the outdoor area. When there isn’t one onsite, they do sell bowls of popcorn made straight from their own machine and a variety of other snack crackers. One of their more unique food offerings is not for us, though - it’s for the dog! Rockcreek offers dog treats made out of their own spent grain left over from the brewing process.
The merchandise section here consists of shirts, hats, jackets, and glassware, along with almost every beer on tap being available in cans to-go.
Rockcreek Brewing is truly a place that makes you want to stay and have “just one more.”
