Beer Trip: Outfield Beer Company in Bonner Springs, Kansas
We had a Saturday afternoon to kill and started looking for area breweries we’d never visited. Outfield Beer Company has been on our list to try for a while, so away we went! Located about a 20-minute drive from us in Bonner Springs (a suburb of Kansas City on the Kansas side), this place had more to offer than we could have anticipated.
The Brewery
The building Outfield occupies might be one of the coolest in all of Kansas City! Sitting inside a 100-year-old former mill, this brewery is absolutely huge - so big, in fact, that about a half dozen other businesses have banded together to share the space forming one perfect conglomerate. Whether you want to stop at a coffee shop, host an event, grab some BBQ, or check out classic car restoration, there are a ton of diverse offerings here.
Though different, each business somehow feeds off of each other well - for example, during our visit, there was a classic car show in the parking lot that subsequently brought in plenty of beer and BBQ patrons! Each of these companies is interconnected via the indoor space where you can easily venture from stop to stop and enjoy your item at one of the hodgepodge seating areas available throughout.
Just behind the bar of the brewery, you will find a mix of pool tables, board games, arcade games, and even a golf simulator. The outdoor space is equally impressive, with a spacious elevated patio complete with picnic tables overlooking a large turf section with tons of sets of cornhole. You could easily spend the day here until they close and not find yourself bored. If you find yourself in the area with your family or your pooch, this place has family-friendly written all over it.
The Beer
Not being familiar with Outfield’s products, we were surprised to find they offer a nice selection of 8 different drafts of their own as well as another 6 - 8 guest taps from around the country. Of their own beer, their brewers do a nice job of varying the styles with not a single duplicate to be found on the menu during our visit. Their menu consisted of your normal staples like a wheat, porter, and stout, but they also had a farmhouse Saison and German brews like a Kolsch and Hefeweizen. These likely won’t be around on the next visit, as the bartender told us that most of them rotate off the board when they run out and are replaced with something new.
On this trip, we only sampled a few brews but found the Porter to be our favorite. This one has a nice roasted taste and a faint hint of coconut towards the end. The El Hefe, their Hefeweizen, was another solid option being light and not overpowering on the banana like many Hefs tend to be. Overall the beer wasn’t quite to our liking on this visit, but that’s the benefit of constantly rotating beer: you never know what will be available to try next time!
Food, Merch, & More
Outfield itself doesn’t have a food menu, but the adjoining Quentin’s BBQ & Sides brings your meal right inside to your table. They have your typical smoked meats of brisket, pulled pork, and sausage, but also have a robust BBQ pizza selection. We cured Warren’s hangry self with a platter of BBQ nachos and some fried cauliflower. We didn’t see a true merchandise section, but they did have a couple of hoodies and a variety of stickers to choose from (so of course we snagged one of those)!
Having heard from many friends that Outfield is well worth visiting, we are glad we finally got to check it out. With its awesome atmosphere and a nice selection of beer, we will certainly be making a return visit!
Cheers!
