Beer Trip: Modist Brewing Co. in Minneapolis, Minnesota
Sitting right outside of downtown Minneapolis, Modist Brewing Co. provides one of the better atmospheres throughout the Twin Cities. Combine that with great beer, and this is one place you will want to check out.
The Brewery
Modist sits inside a large brick building that appears to be some kind of a warehouse at one point or another. Walking up you see the smaller outdoor patio to your left, but inside it seems like the place everyone would want to be. The space has tons of natural light that reflects perfectly off of the white backsplash of the bar, which runs nearly the entire length of the place.
While we were there, they had custom-painted skateboards, all for sale, neatly displayed on the wall. They looked so natural that we thought they were the permanent decor, but we were informed that they were part of a rotating fundraiser that the brewery does with various organizations. There are tons of tables spread about, offering plenty of places to sit with friends or even a place to bring your pup as they are dog-friendly.

The Beer
Like many of the Minneapolis breweries, Modist has plenty of beer options to choose from. During our visit, they had 16 different brews on tap, plus an additional 6 choices only available in cans. The bartender informed us that they maintain 5 flagship beers, rotate a few additional ones seasonally, and the remainder of the taps are one-time experimental draws. IPAs are the name of the game here, occupying 6 taps - but they also had multiple sours, traditional lagers, golden ales, and a few others.
Having quite a bit of time on our hands, we were able to try several of their offerings and everything was above-average in the flavor department. One of our favorites was actually a canned option called Hello, My Pronouns Are. This Berliner Weisse was infused with a great tangerine taste, making it on the sweeter side but it had just the right amount of sour which really swung your taste buds back and forth. Another great brew was their First Call. We’re a bit of a sucker for coffee beers, and this lager-style one definitely reminded us why. It is gold in color and light and easy to drink like a lager, but you would have thought it was a stout with the rich coffee flavor shining through.
Food, Merch, & More
While Modist doesn’t have a kitchen, they do have a few food options consisting of pretzels, popcorn, and a party mix that seemed to be quite popular. If you want merchandise, they have you covered. They have koozies, duffle bags, glassware, hats, and socks, and it’s no exaggeration that they have more t-shirt options than any brewery we’ve ever visited. They actually have so many apparel choices that they only display one of each item and you have to ask them behind the bar to grab one of your size!
Modist really has everything you’d want in a brewery - a fun atmosphere, good beer, and plenty of beer options. This is one place we will certainly be making a reappearance to while in Minneapolis.
