Beer Trip: Lawrence Beer Company in Lawrence, Kansas
Located just a few blocks from the heart of downtown, Lawrence Beer Company offers tons of parking which was a big draw since we happened to be visiting on a KU gameday. Lawrence Beer Company, or “LBC” for short, was the perfect place to grab a bite to eat and kill a few hours while in town. This was a special one, as it was actually the first brewery our new addition to our family, Warren, got to experience!
The Brewery
LBC has an awesome brick facility that is huge on the inside and has large overhead doors that open up to the outdoors when weather allows (certainly not the day we visited - it was snowing)! Many breweries that serve food give off more of a restaurant vibe than that of a true brewery, but LBC doesn’t fall into that category. You can tell that beer is the focus here and that the food, while delicious, comes secondary.
Walking in you can see the entire place, complete with a large granite bar to your left, tons of tables immediately in front of you, some really cool live-edge wooden booths, and a standing bar. The whole place feels very lively with lots of natural light and TVs strategically placed throughout. They even have a separate room available to reserve for larger or private parties!
The Beer
Having stopped in once before, it is always nice when a brewery continually changes their beer selection - and LBC does it as well as anyone in the area. They always keep 12+ beers on tap, with 8 or so being rotators. Roughly one third of the drafts are varying styles of IPAs, including a hazy, session, and double. In addition to these, this trip also featured several German options like a Kolsch, Vienna Lager, and a Schwarz-bier. One thing worth noting is that if you are driving, a large portion of their beers are over 6% ABV and a whopping 5 choices were above 8% on our latest visit.
With so many rotating drafts to choose from, it’s difficult to recommend any particular beer. With that said, the BIG Peach is the one staple we’ve sampled and packs one heck of a peach punch! This beer is a very easy drinking Saison with a great juicy taste, making it perfect for a warm day. The IPAs seemed to be on the hoppier side, particularly the House Divided. While this was a bit much for us, they were definitely the most popular options.
Food, Merch, & More
As previously mentioned, LBC is also a full restaurant offering burgers, tacos, BBQ sandwiches, and salads. While the beer might draw you in, you really do need to eat here as the food is top notch. If beer isn’t your thing, they also offer a bar full of other liquors and wines.
LBC does merchandise better than anyone else in the area with tons of options for shirts, hats, glassware, and to-go beer all brilliantly displayed near the front door.
It doesn’t seem like Lawrence Beer Company gets the credit it deserves amidst the Lawrence beer scene, but it absolutely should. With solid beer, great food, and a fun atmosphere, it isn’t going to disappoint. In addition to their East location, we’ve got their new West location on our list to visit next!
Cheers!
