Beer Trip: Field Day Brewing Co. in North Liberty, Iowa
Having visited hundreds of breweries, it’s not very often that we say “wow!” when walking up to a new one; however, Field Day Brewing Company made us say just that. This massive facility offers everything you could want in a brewery and so much more.
The Brewery
Field Day is located in a newer area of town with several walking trails connecting it to neighboring businesses and houses. They have a large parking lot, as well as tons of bike racks, as it seemed like biking was a primary way of getting here for many. For a place that has only been open since 2023, Field Day rivals some of the biggest breweries out there in both the size and modernization of the facility.
The indoor space is huge with tables and chairs throughout, a custom circular booth in the center, and a wrap-around bar towards the back of the room. In a separate area they feature 4 duckpin bowling lanes, which is basically miniature bowling using smaller pins and shorter lanes. The space joins seamlessly onto a large, covered patio through multiple overhead glass garage doors. In addition to the covered patio, they also have more seating and multiple gas firepits on a gravel lot - all overlooking a nice pond! If you happen to bring kids to the brewery, Field Day has you covered with a playground right onsite.
The Beer
Just as impressive as their facility’s size is the size of the beer menu, featuring 20 different brews to choose from. Field Day organizes their menu as “Lagers” and “Not Lagers,” which is rather unique. Lagers, mostly Czech and German styles, are actually their specialty and include pilsners, Vienna, Helles, and American styles. In fact, most of their lager lineup is served through specialized pouring faucets that allow them to regulate the exact amount of head they want for each beer. The “Not Lager” menu featured multiple IPAs, sours, a stout, and a porter. Maybe it was just the individuals we talked to, but the staff at Field Day were extremely knowledgeable about the beer they brew and educated us with each new pour. Whether it was where the hops come from or the traditional region of the beer style, these guys know their stuff.
We obviously weren’t able to try all 20 beers during our visit, but we did have tasters of several along with full pours of our favorites. One that stood out is their Czech Dark. This dark lager has a great malty taste and finishes with a faint bitterness. The favorite of the trip, though, was the Juice Belly, which is their flagship hazy IPA. This is different than most hazy IPAs, offering perfect citrus flavoring with a very subtle hoppiness - very well done!
Food, Merch, & More
In addition to being an active brewery, Field Day has a nice food selection featuring salads, sandwiches, burgers, and street tacos. We didn’t try anything on our trip, but it sure looked appealing. While beer is their specialty, they also have a full bar menu available and their own lineup of cannabis sparkling water that seemed to be a top seller. The merchandise wall is located near the bar and includes t-shirts, biking jerseys, lots of hats, and glassware. Fortunately for us, the staff was able to locate another batch of brewery stickers for us to bring home.
Field Day Brewing Company is sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone who stops in. We can’t wait until our next visit and will be sure to bring our son to check things out on the playground!
Cheers!
