Beer Trip: Central Standard Brewing in Wichita, Kansas
Wichita has had several breweries come and go over the years, but Central Standard Brewing has been one of the town’s staples. This place was popular when Morgan lived here 8 years ago, and it’s still one of the city’s hot spots for locals, tourists, and students alike. It was exciting and nostalgic for us to revisit during a recent Wichita trip!
The Brewery
Central Standard is located in an area with not much else around it. With its rustic whiskey barrels, picnic tables, hop-shaped bike racks, and overhead light strands highlighting the outdoor space, you certainly can’t miss this place from the street! The patio flows perfectly into the indoor space via two, huge overhead doors.
The inside is decorated with a 70’s and 80’s vibe featuring older couches and chairs, along with church-style lighting. There are tons of live plants spread about the place, including some trees that are probably nearing 9 feet tall! At the back of the room, you will find a large, L-shaped wraparound bar with seating for 10+. To top it all off, the place is dog-friendly and you’ll find some of the most welcoming staff out there. Shoutout to Val!
The Beer
Central Standard always has top-notch beer, and you never know what might be on the menu. It constantly rotates, with only 1 or 2 brews remaining as flagships. While they do swap out their beer regularly, one thing you can always count on is that they’ll bring back crowd-pleasing favorites from time to time. While you can’t always get the same thing you had on your last visit, keep a look out and it might be back around in the months to come. During this latest visit, they offered 13 different beers of varying styles including IPAs, sours, saisons, a porter, and a Vienna lager.
We are always drawn towards beer that incorporates various additives vs. the sole reliance on malts and hops to create flavors. The brewers at CSB seemed to speak directly to our taste buds in this way through their use of pineapple, vanilla, and cinnamon on this latest trip. Their brew Style Points is a perfect example - this milkshake-style double IPA was very smooth, creamy, and offered awesome hints of both strawberries and vanilla. Another beer worth noting is the Bling Blau, which is a gose style ale. This one had a rich, fruity, blueberry taste that was very sweet but also had a crisp, tart finish - very crushable.
Food, Merch, & More
If beer isn’t your thing, they have you covered at CSB offering multiple varieties of both sangria and cider. While they don’t have a full kitchen, Central Standard has several house-made pizza choices and often hosts food trucks as well. We didn’t sample anything on this visit, but the pizzas certainly looked (and smelled!) appetizing. The merchandise section here offers shirts, magnets, stickers, and a massive selection of 19 different hats!
Once you visit CSB, you won’t soon forget it. This place has both an awesome environment and great quality beer. We can’t wait to make it back for our next visit!
Cheers!
