Beer Trip: Aggieville Brewing Company in Manhattan, Kansas
With both of us being K-State graduates and having family in Manhattan, we make it back to our old stomping grounds quite often. After visiting Aggieville Brewing Company for the first time on our latest trip back, this place quickly rose up the ranks of our must-visit destinations while in town. Although this place is brand-spankin’ new (just opened in 2023!), we could easily see them becoming a Manhattan staple for many, Townies and visitors alike.
The Brewery
Don’t let the name fool you - Aggieville Brewing is not currently located in Aggieville, but rather just outside of town on Highway US 177; however, they currently have a second location in the works that will be in Aggieville. The current space, affectionately referred to as the “Pillsbury” location, offers quite a few tables, a bar spanning half the building, and a separate area with private seating. If the weather is nice, though, you have to utilize their outdoor seating area - it is one of the best we’ve encountered in all of our beer travels!
The space offers seating via picnic tables on a concrete patio, a covered, elevated gazebo area that doubles as a stage, and additional seating on a spacious turf area. The turf portion features several sets of cornhole (including two sets for little kids!) and, being completely fenced in, was the perfect place for kids to safely wander about. For a warm sunny day, they had plenty of shade via their structures, trees, and umbrellas. While it wasn’t in use when we visited, they also have another large outdoor bar that we would imagine comes in handy on a busy day.
The Beer
Aggieville Brewing offers plenty of options for you to choose from with a whopping 18 taps. We were told that their Every Man (American lager) and Old School (Pilsner) were the two flagship options and that they rotate out the other 16 selections until they were gone. During this visit, they had many German-style beers like Vienna lager, Hefeweizen, and Kolsch, along with multiple IPAs and sours. With so many choices it can be hard to choose just one, so they make it easier on you by having six predetermined flights - talk about an “easy button!”
Spending a good portion of the afternoon here, we were able to try quite a few brews - and it just so happened that all of our favorites happened to be rotators. The Serenity Now! is a gose and provides a nice blend of sourness and saltiness to go with a great cucumber flavor. Cucumber beers can be hit-or-miss, but this one had it going on. Another top sampling is the Midnight on Moro, which gets its namesake from the street where Aggieville is located in Manhattan. This milk stout had just the right coffee notes and went down extremely smoothly. The last one worth noting was their Smolder. This is a helles-style brew, but has a rich smoky flavor that really made it stand out as you don’t often encounter it at a brewery.
Food, Merch, & More
In addition to beer, Aggieville Brewing has an extensive food menu featuring burgers, sandwiches, pasta, and smoked meats. While we didn’t get a full meal, we definitely recommend the Slammin Salmon Dip as an appetizer. If beer isn’t your thing, they have your standard bar drink selections available as well.
For as new as this place is, we were pleasantly surprised with their nice merchandise selection featuring shirts, hats, glassware, coffee mugs, and even tin signs. Of course, we made sure to grab ourselves a few of their unique stickers.
